As gaming and virtual reality technology progresses, going to the “pain cave” is becoming more—dare we say—fun. Zwift integration with smart trainers like the KICKR CLIMB is challenging cyclists in new, exciting ways, opening doors for those of us who prefer training with (and racing) our distant friends.

Of All the Apps to Choose From, Why Zwift?

There are many reasons why cyclists love Zwift. Namely, it solves a lot of the problems that cyclists face while training indoors.

For example, cycling over large amounts of time in a blank room can get monotonous. Maybe even make you feel a little insane at times. Zwift immerses riders in virtual utopias, complete with mountains, beaches, towns, and forests. We can’t say you won’t notice your legs burning as you push through the virtual hills, but it’s definitely better while looking at the beautiful landscapes of Watopia.

Riding with friends (or competitors) is also infinitely more fun. Where riding outdoors with a group requires some calculated organization, racing with hundreds of friends on Zwift is as easy as hopping on your KICKR and turning on the program.

It’s immersive and competitive, rewards you for great workouts and racing achievements, and is a great way to break up training sessions and keep you inspired to ride.

How We Kick it Up a Notch

The KICKR offers the best real ride-feel of any smart trainer on the market, so it only makes sense to pair up with a program as immersive as the Zwift. Nothing comes as close to cycling outdoors, indoors, like Zwift and the KICKR line of Smart Trainers.

The addition of the KICKR CLIMB will take it to another level, with real-time elevation, modulating the angle of your bike from -10% up to +20%. So yes—you’ll be pedaling through hills in the exact same angle as you would be as if you were outside. It’s that real-world feel and crazy tech that keeps cyclists glued to their smart trainer. That means more miles, stronger workouts, and a whole lot more fun.

The Dream Setup

Good news? You don’t need a ton of space. As long as you can fit your KICKR and a laptop or TV in the room, you’re good. For a more visual guide, watch the video below to see what an optimized KICKR + Zwift training area looks like.

It just requires a few items you probably already have:

While these will cover the basic needs for a Zwift session, we highly recommend including a TV, KICKR CLIMB, KICKR HEADWIND, Wahoo Fitness Trainer Mat, Wahoo Fitness Trainer Desk, and 2 Bottle Cages.

Since you’ll be indoors and don’t have the natural breeze to cool you off, you’ll be drenched during these indoor sessions. The KICKR HEADWIND and water bottle cage will ensure you’re kept hydrated and cool and your mat will grip your trainer and mop the hard-earned sweat off the floor.

Plugging in your Zwift session to a big screen really enhances the experience. You’ll love using Zwift on any size screen, but having the road in front of you on a large display will draw you deeper into the training session. Plus, it’s easy—just connect your laptop to the TV via an HDMI cable and you’re good to go.
